The concentration of carbon dioxide ({eq}CO_2{/eq}) in Earth's atmosphere is increasing primarily due to human activities, such as burning fossil fuels for energy and transportation, deforestation, and land-use changes. When we burn fossil fuels like coal, oil, and gas, carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere. Deforestation and land-use changes also contribute to the increase in carbon dioxide levels, as trees absorb carbon dioxide and their removal decreases the amount of carbon dioxide that can be absorbed. These human activities have caused the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to rise from around 280 parts per million (ppm) before the Industrial Revolution to over 415 ppm today, which is the highest level in at least 800,000 years. The increase in carbon dioxide levels is leading to global warming and climate change, which can have significant impacts on the environment, including rising sea levels, changes in weather patterns, and more frequent and severe natural disasters.
