The first car was invented in Germany by Karl Benz in 1885. Benz is widely regarded as the father of the automobile, as his gasoline-powered vehicle was the first to be commercially successful. The car was named the Benz Patent-Motorwagen and had three wheels, a rear-mounted single-cylinder engine, and a top speed of around 10 miles per hour. While there were other early pioneers in the development of the automobile, including Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot and his steam-powered vehicle in France in 1769, it was Benz's invention that paved the way for the modern automobile industry.
