The outermost layer of the skin, called the stratum corneum, is made up of dead skin cells packed tightly together. These cells contain a protein called keratin, which is hydrophobic (water-repelling) and prevents water from entering or escaping the body. Additionally, the sebaceous glands in the skin produce sebum, an oily substance that helps to keep the skin moisturized and also acts as a barrier to water. Together, these mechanisms make the skin waterproof to a certain extent. However, prolonged exposure to water or harsh chemicals can damage the skin's natural protective barrier, leading to dryness and even more water absorption.
