A greenhouse gas is a gas that traps and holds heat in the Earth's atmosphere, contributing to the greenhouse effect and subsequently, global warming. The different types of greenhouse gases include carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), fluorinated gases (such as hydrofluorocarbons and perfluorocarbons), and ozone (O3). Carbon dioxide is the most commonly known greenhouse gas and is emitted through burning fossil fuels, deforestation, and other industrial processes. Methane is mainly emitted through agriculture and the production of fossil fuels, while nitrous oxide is released through fertilizers and industrial processes. Fluorinated gases are synthetic gases used mainly in refrigeration and air conditioning. Ozone, found in the Earth's stratosphere, also contributes to the greenhouse effect when it is present in the lower atmosphere.
