A pawn can capture an opposing piece in two ways: 1) By moving diagonally one square ahead and to the left or right, if there is an opposing piece in that square. 2) By performing an en passant capture if the opposing pawn has just moved two squares forward on its first move and is located next to the pawn that is capturing. In this case, the capturing pawn moves diagonally to the square behind the opposing pawn, which is then removed from the board.
