However, unlike land mammals, dolphins do not have nipples, instead, they secrete milk from mammary slits on their underside. The milk is rich in fat and protein, which is necessary for dolphins to become strong and agile swimmers. After the first year, young dolphins begin to eat solid foods, but still nurse occasionally for up to three years.
