Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a greenhouse gas that contributes to the greenhouse effect. When the sun's energy reaches the Earth's atmosphere, some of the energy is reflected back into space and the rest heats the planet's surface. The heat is then radiated back into the atmosphere as infrared radiation. Greenhouse gases such as CO2 absorb and trap this radiation, preventing it from escaping into space and thus causing the planet to warm. In other words, CO2 acts like a blanket, trapping heat and causing the Earth's temperature to increase, leading to global warming and climate change. The increase in atmospheric CO2 concentrations primarily results from human activities such as burning fossil fuels and deforestation.
