    Yes, the bluefin tuna is currently listed as an endangered species. Overfishing, particularly for the high demand for sushi and sashimi in Japan, has caused significant declines in bluefin tuna populations worldwide. In 2013, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classified the Atlantic bluefin tuna as endangered, while the Southern bluefin tuna and Pacific bluefin tuna are classified as critically endangered. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) has also listed bluefin tuna on its Appendix I, which means that international trade in these fish is heavily restricted in order to protect the species.
