    (a) The lungs are a pair of spongy, cone-shaped organs located in the chest cavity. The right lung has three lobes, while the left lung has two lobes due to the space occupied by the heart. The lungs are covered by a thin membrane called the pleura and are separated by the mediastinum. The trachea, bronchi, and bronchioles are the air passages that lead to the lungs, and the alveoli are the tiny air sacs where gas exchange occurs.

    (b) The primary function of the lungs is to exchange gases between the air and blood. During inhalation, oxygen-rich air enters the lungs, and oxygen diffuses from the alveoli into the bloodstream. At the same time, carbon dioxide, a waste product of metabolism, diffuses from the blood into the alveoli to be exhaled during exhalation. This gas exchange is facilitated by the large surface area of the alveoli and the thin walls of the capillaries that surround them. Additionally, the lungs also help regulate the body's pH balance and assist in the immune response by producing surfactant, a substance that helps prevent the collapse of the alveoli and fights off infections.
